I will create art specifically for Call for Entries when I feel like they speak to me and the artwork I create. Recently I read a call for "Movement". Immediately my brain began to brainstorm a million ideas. Not being able to narrow it down to just one I decided to try to depict that movement of brainstorming. What does that spinning look like inside my head? The process of brainstorming any idea, visualizing it, creating it...it's a movement all of its own. The whole process of expression is exhilarating, scary, messy, beautiful, all consuming, relentless and completely magical. It's like giving birth to this idea that comes out at its own speed with a million things going right and wrong until what you are trying to say becomes a reality. Sometimes the end product is exactly how you pictured it and other times your idea takes on a life of its own. "When Thoughts Defy Gravity" is a final product about the process.
Earlier this year I was selected as one of 5 artists from the last 5 decades to participate in the Alumni Excellence Exhibition at Mount Saint Joseph University's Studio San Giuseppi. I drop the work off in about a week and have been getting everything gallery ready, but like most artists also still creating as they contacted me that they have additional room and I can bring more pieces. This is a sampling of what I am taking minus a few that are on the framing table and still packed from their recent trip to galleries in California. Getting the artworks "gallery ready" is the tedious part in which all artists wish they had assistants. I've been building my own frames for a while but have just realized by the time I factor in the cost of wood and labor, I could just order them cradled from the manufacturer and save myself a ton of time. The show opens February 1st and spans that month. I'm going to miss the energy these pieces bring me while working in the studio for the next 2 months.
