Teaching Philosophy
My decision to pursue a career as an art educator stems from my passion for making and responding to art and my desire to help others realize an artistic potential that they may not have known that they have. It is my dream, therefore, to offer the most stimulating and fruitful art program possible for my students. When students leave my classroom, I want them to become such focused observers that they never see the world the same again.
The students’ experience in the arts should involve personal development, an authentic artistic experience, problem solving skills and the role of art in society. It is the art teacher’s role to go beyond simply describing a technique or medium as the lesson’s focus to using the medium as a means to achieve a richer, more profound creative experience. Since not every student is an athlete or academic, the art room provides a place where that student can be successful.
My status as a producing artist enables me to realize the joy and satisfaction of being able to think and act creatively. It is important to me to help learners to engage more fully and more meaningfully in the creative problem solving process. I bring the advantages of maturity, experience and enthusiasm to teaching. I look forward to sharing my passion for art, my knowledge of art production and art history, and my planning and organizational skills with my own students!
